research in asian architecture
For this assignment, in groups of 6, we were required to choose a topic proposal and produce an A2 poster along with a presentation.
The topic our research was titled ' The Impact of British Colonialism on Malaysia's Post-Independence Architectural Style. I learned alot about the history of our country particularly how the british has influenced our local architecture from pre to post-independence times.
Personally, my question was 'What can be described as Post-Independent Archietcture ?' This led me to learn alot on significant and symbolic buildings in Malaysia. Buildings that were to carve the new architectural landscape of our country such as Muzium Negara, Stadium Merdeka and so on. Also, the different ways the architects have incorporated malay and local elements to create a 'Malaysian' architecture.
Contextual architecture
For this assignment, we were required to study a selected building in asia and how it has responded to its context. I decided to study the Salinger House by architect Jimmy Lim to further learn about our local architecture and how traditional elements were incorporated to modern houses.
For this building in particular, it was interesting how the architect has taken inspiration from the traditional malay house from aspects such as spatial organisation, construction and material to produce a contemporary architecture. Also, the house was very tailored to the needs of the users as they use it to host classes and so on.
