This module is an introduction to the common building materials used in the industry. It informs the students of the visual and physical properties of each material and its suitable application in building design in terms of function, impact and concept.
Assignment :
-
Famous Architect
-
Form, Space and Pattern : An Experiential Experience
FAMOUS ARCHITECT
The first assignment required us to study a building of a famous architect in terms of its materiality. We had to identify the selection of materials as well as it properties and the impact of it on the design of the building. We were to summarize and present the information in 2 A2 boards.
In a group of 3, we chose to study The Barcelona Pavilion by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. The building itself is very minimalistic in nature and makes use of very rich building materials. The careful selection of those building materials contributed in both functionality and design concept. For instance, the use of the centre marble to be a statement piece of wealth as well as a load bearing wall. Overall, i learned how to identify building materials and its impact on the design concept and functionality.

FORM, SPACE & PATTERN : AN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION
This assignment aims to generate a more in-depth understanding of building materials. By selecting an interesting local building, we were to identify the different materials and it's role in creating user experience, impact on the environment and function.
In a group of 6, we selected Greenhouse by Muir which is a commercial building consisting of several different restaurants. This building was interesting as each restaurant had its own theme and was reflected by the different use of materials to create a different ambience. It was easier to analyse the use of building materials through first-hand experience. As a result, it gave me a clearer picture in determining how every factor of materials come together to create a cohesive design.
