1A - CASE STUDY : MANILA

The first part of the project is a case study of a given city which in this case is Escolta Street in Manila. The study is based on Jahn Gehl's "Life in Between Buildings" and is to show in depth understanding of social activity patterns and contact points within the street.

The project gave me insight on the relationship between urban form and the social consequences that arise from it. Furthermore, the importance of public space to enhance quality of life through social engagements.

1B - Comparative essay analysis

The second part is a comparative essay analysis between Escolta Street, Manila from project 1A and Jalan Besar, Klang from our Design Studio site analysis. The findings we have accumulated were to be analysed side by side to identify similarities and dissimilarities in social patterns and were to be done individually.

Through this assignment, it allowed me to better understand the theories and social patterns due to the local context of Klang. Observing and experiencing real life scenarios on site. Consequently, I also came to realise the vast similarities of the urban form and sociocultural context of both the sites.

2 - REACTION PAPER

Subsequent to each reader given, we were required to produce a reaction paper. The 3 readers are :

1A "Global Sense of Place" - Doreen Massey

2A "Learning from Las Vegas" - Robert Venturi

3A "Eyes of the Skin" - Juhani Pallassma

The objective of the reaction papers was to fully understand the reader and form opinions from our own experiences and knowledge. Each reader gave me an interesting perspective on their respective theories and allowed me to view things in a new light.
