STUDIO III
MEMORIAL
JOURNEY OF THE 5 SENSES
This project required us to design a memorial for 2 significant events, namely Malaysia's 60'th Merdeka and the passing of King Bhumibol. One had to be linear and the other one concentric based on the spatial typologies introduced to us.
What I learned in this project is how to incorporate the real life events in the narrative of the design. This is to allow the users to experience the message we are trying to convey to them through the 5 senses and spatial experience. Also, realising that the impact of the space is felt more through the 5 senses.

SITE ANALYSIS & CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

This assignment focused on site interpretation and concept development. The site for our project was based in Clan Jetties, Penang, an aging heritage site. We were required to design a Visitor Interpretive Centre and come up with a concept based on this interesting site.
We had to show our concept through an A3 sketch. I decided to draw a contrasting image of the place of how it was then and how it is now. In the past, trading was the main economy, people lived in clans and the houses were still well kept. Now, the it has become a tourist destination but the place is in a bad shape.
What I've learned from this assignment is how to observe and read a site. How to pick up on the interesting things and translate it into a concept. The message that you want the users to interpret and discover about the place. Also, the importance of the intangible quality and how that links back to the 5 senses much like in project 1
VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE
genius loci

The visitor interpretive centre allows people to discover the place by experiencing it through the journey of the people. Derived from 3 key events that have impacted this place. Firstly, the arrival of the immigrants, the unexpected hardship and the present time.
